Objectives and Readings

Course Objectives
This course offers a survey of Western art and architecture from the Prehistoric era to the 21st century as well as an introduction to the diverse methods used in art historical inquiries. The material will be presented through lectures, assigned readings, and in-class discussions. At the end of the semester you should be able to recognize works of art historical value, articulate and discuss diverse artistic styles, develop and implement a vocabulary for formal analysis, and gain a better understanding of the production and cultural reception of works of art.

New and used copies of these texts should be available at the Furman University Bookstore.

Readings and Additional Texts
In addition to readings from Janson and Tucker, you may be asked to read additional articles from scholarly journals or texts throughout the semester. These readings will be available in the library at the circulation desk.
