Summary

Currently I am an Engish major, although I still have an interest in the field of Journalism.  I am 19, and hope to at first move somewhere out of the south when I graduate.  Beyond this point, I choose not to predict right now.  I have a fairly large family, a stable GPA so far, and several hobbies I enjoy outside of my academics.

Education

MAJOR AND TRACK: After much deliberation, I have finally decided on English as my major.  Nevertheless, this too is still subject to change.  Currently, I am enjoying my third semester at UNC and plan to graduate May 2003.

DISTINCTIONS: I’m not sure my list of distinctions is so impressive.  My cumulative GPA after the spring semester was 3.1. . .  Each “A” I’ve made I believe is an academic accomplishment, but beyond that I have few of which to brag.

ANYTHING ELSE: While my major is tentatively English I plan to endeavor Spanish as a minor.  I have special interests also in United States history, music study, psychology, native American history, and religious studies.  I wish I had more room in my schedule to further focus on these things, but I think these areas will remain ones in which I’ll continue to dabble.

Professional Experience

POSITION:  My most recent job was less for professional preparation and experience as it was for pleasure.  I spent the latter half of this past summer working as a dockhand at a local restaurant and marina in Wrightsville Beach.  My role as a dockhand was nothing foreign to me, as I had grown up surrounded by boats and the water.  Nevertheless, I learned several things, as far as working environments go, that I believe will remain applicable to job experiences of mine in the future.  The importance of efficiency, cooperation, tolerance, enthusiasm, and self confidence are a few of these things.

POSITION: I shared last summer’s time as a dockhand with my experience in Greenville, South Carolina.  I interned in Greenville with Linning Hughes Public Relations.  We campaigned for the local sheriffs' race, worked on  press releases for new and innovative big and small businesses in the area, encouraged community interest and involvement in the one of  Greenville’s major hospitals, and organized and "All Star Graduates" banquet to honor outstanding high school seniors.  This job, clearly very different from mine in Wrightsville beach, was one where my learning I feel was a greater accomplishment than my actual “doing,” so to speak.  The example set by those I worked was the greatest learning tool for me.

POSITION: My third most recent job experience was working for Atlantic Packaging, a paper packaging business, etc., in Wilmington, North Carolina.  I worked with the shipping department, keeping track of the inventory in the warehouse and truck schedules.  Again this was a learning experience in that I was able to learn the importance of punctuality (regarding the trucks), organization, and management.

Personal Background

FAMILY:  I was born in Wilmington, North Carolina at New Hanover Hospital, May 8, 1981, and I am the second of my three other siblings--Wes, Ellen, and Scott.  My brother and I both attend UNC, although he will graduate in the spring.  My sister just entered high school as a freshman at Episcopal high school and my youngest brother is endeavoring his first year of middle school in Wilmington.  Strangely, my home is no longer full of chaos and kids (although I never underestimate my little brother), and my household is suddenly one of three.  Nevertheless, Christmastime will no doubt bring with it the familiar excitement of chaos and kids again into my home . . .

HOBBIES: I have tried, especially this year, to explore the things I enjoy more completely than I managed to in the midst of last year's freshman craze.  I play intramural soccer (go Killer Kicks!)-- yes, the team name could use some work--and look forward to intramural basketball with some of my buds this winter.  I play club Ultimate Frisbee--and again, I am a rookie at this hobby as,  I mentioned before.  I participate in random sorority activities, which I suppose is a hobby as well because I do enjoy those too.  I enjoy a variety of music, and this too I consider a hobby because I appreciate every opportunity of the day I have to do this.  Traveling, short or long distances, is a particular interest of mine as well, and I enjoy traveling (road traveling, in particular) whenever I have the chance. Finally, riding my bike, a juvenile activity my friends believe and one that is a great and source of humor for them, could quite possibly rank number one on my list of hobbies.  I also enjoy reading, although in my spare time I generally prefer more active sources of entertainment.

ANYTHING ELSE: The only other thing I would add is a reference to my interest in children.  I have done various volunteer work, most of which was dealing with younger children.  I don' t necessarily consider this a hobby because I feel that this interest of mine may provide direction toward my career.  Still, I am an English major so who knows what new interests I may find in this field.
