Project 1. Impact of structure size and type on hyporheic exchange
| The computer models HECRAS and MODFLOW were coupled to simulate the hydraulics of hyporheic exchange induced by a single in-channel geomorphic structure in a simplified hypothetical stream. An example schematic showing model domains and patterns of predicted cross-bed flux:
| A sensitivity analysis was performed to determine the shapes of the relationships between structure type and size and basic metrics of hyporheic exchange such as downwelling flux rate, subsurface residence time, and hyporheic storage volume.
| Results of the sensitivity analysis indicate interesting nonlinear results in some cases.
| A modest field confirmation of model results was carried out in a small stream.
