click for mini essay: The Edison of the Computer Age: Bill Gates

Overseas adoption is often a welcome alternative to U.S. adoption. Many people who do not have luck in finding a child in the U.S. turn to adoption programs in other countries. Often times these programs are linked with Christian organizations. A foreign adoption is an answered prayer for many Christian and non-Christian families.

Delving further into the topic of overseas adoption, a number of questions arise concerning its appeal as an alternative to U.S. adoption. For instance, how long does it take to adopt a child in the U.S. verses overseas? Another question to research is what are the qualifications of adoption and are they different overseas? The answers to such questions yield insight into the process and appeal of this form of adoption.

The intended audience for such research is educated men and women between the ages of 30 to 45. The audience interested in this form of adoption might have had trouble adopting a child in the U.S., or might be looking to help orphaned children in other areas of the world. Christian missionary groups and other types of outreach organizations would be interested in this information. A person seeking this information would be a reader of a specialized magazine and/or a national newspaper. This would focus on their specific interests and hobbies along with keeping abreast on global events.

TITLE: The Edison of the Computer Age: Bill Gates
(TOPIC AREA: Net People and Places)

When people think of important figures in the Internet the name Bill Gates comes to mind. Gates was not however, one of the early influential founders of the Internet. While this latecomer did not found Microsoft until 1975, it was not long before he dominated his field. As a multitasking genius and fast moving businessman this entrepreneur has "embodied the digital era." (1) The name Bill Gates has become a brand. "He has become the Edison and Ford of our age." (1)

Gates is referred to as the most famous Harvard drop out. Now twenty some years after dropping out he is one of the richest men in the world. In 1996 he was making around $30 million a day. (1) As Microsoft Chairman and Chief software engineer he has brought us the Internet spreading the net to half a billion worldwide. (2)

As a child William Henry Gates III, know to his parents as "Trey," had the same aggressive strong-willed attitude that made him what he is today. Always clashing with his mother Mary's same strong-will, Bill was sent to counseling at age 12. The psychologist reported back to his parents to stop trying to fight their son's stubbornness. He was going to win. (1) His mother died in 1994, but not before seeing her son's passion pay off. In 1986, Gates built a four vacation home complex for his family, along with building his own mansion outside Seattle.

In the future for Microsoft, Gates envisions expanding into a "media and context company." Gates is still fighting the controversy surrounding Microsoft's monopolistic tactics. "Control is in Microsoft's hand whether we like it or not." (2) The world has not
heard the last of Bill Gates.
