We spent Thursday morning in Assisi, visiting the home of St. Francis and ended the day in Florence.

Here's a lovely fresco on the side of a building winding up the hill to the cathedral.
Our first view, across the piazza, of the cathredral in Assisi.

The frescos inside this church were overwhelmingly beautiful. I also don't think I've ever been in a cathedral that had an upper and lower church. In essence, two churches stacked right on top of eachother with markedly different artwork and overall atmosphere.
...and then, as if by magic, we were in Florence! And here's the altar in the Baptistry attached to the Duomo (main cathedral and one of the largest in the world).
Note the amazing inlaid stonework and glorious gold leaf in the top of the arch.
But wait! There's more amazing gold leaf on the ceiling. The whole ceiling. Wow!
The front of the Duomo.
I think this is the only picture I have with our fabulous tour director, Andrea. He's the bald guy on the right giving directions.
Some of the detail of the carvings on the Duomo.
Graffiti, Italian style.
These flags were flying all over Italy in protest of Bush's visit to Rome, which occured the day before we arrived.
