[Introduction
Founded in 1970, National Public Radio is a nonprofit organization that is the leading producer of public radio programming in the United States. NPR has nearly 500 member public radio stations nationwide, and operates a national satellite program distribution system, with regional uplinks for local public radio stations and other producers. The mission of National Public Radio is to work in partnership with member stations to create a public informed by a greater understanding and appreciation of events, ideas and cultures.
[Scope
This
pathfinder is intended for both the uninitiated to the diverse offerings and
story of National Public Radio (NPR), as well as those who listen regularly and
want to know more about this audio odyssey.
Resources, with some exceptions, are limited to those found on the
University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill campus and online. Links to selected
NPR programs and producers are provided as an introduction to selected popular
shows that NPR currently delivers. All
materials have a current emphasis and focus on NPR today with some resources
highlighting the history dating back to 1970.
