Project Title: Empowering Youth to
Health; Honoring our Elders: Health Screening for Homebound Elders; Oral
Histories: Hearing from Waccamaw-Siouan elders
Medical
Student in University of Oslo, Norway
We have been based in Prospect, Robeson county
and worked with the Waccamaw-Siouan and Tuscarora tribes. Our work has involved
helping out at youth camps for both tribes, working
with local doctors and alternative medicine professionals and meeting Waccamaw
Siouan elders in their homes to gather oral histories.
People in the community have been incredibly welcoming,
friendly and open. They have invited us into their homes, told us stories and
cooked us traditional food. Being from a different culture and a country far
away this experience has been a cultural exchange for us.
We are really grateful for everything we have learnt about
local history, culture and
traditions.
