Title IX Part I Being that I am female and a collegiate athlete, the adoption of Title IX was an interesting topic for me to research. Before 1972, femles were not afforded the same opportunities to participate in athletic competition as their male counterparts. There was a major discrepancy in the acceptance rates to colleges and universities between men and women. Also, men were granted scholarships at a much higher rate then women.

Title IX, also known as the Education Amendment, was passed in 1972 in order to create equal opportunities for both men and women. It protects individuals from discrimination based on sex primarily in educational programs or programs that are funded by the national government. This applies to vocational, profession and higher education public institutions. Title IX has attracted public attention particularly in the sporting arena. This amendment has had a major effect on intercollegiate sports. With the implementation of Title IX, colleges and universities were forced to create proportional numbers of sports for men and women. They were also forced to provide an equal number of scholarships for men and women. Failure to do so will result in the loss of federal funds.
