Title IX

Part I

Being that I am female and a collegiate athlete, the adoption of Title IX was an interesting topic for me to research. Before 1972, femles were not afforded the same opportunities to participate in athletic competition as their male counterparts. There was a major discrepancy in the acceptance rates to colleges and universities between men and women. Also, men were granted scholarships at a much higher rate then women.

Title IX, also known as the Education Amendment, was passed in 1972 in order to create equal opportunities for both men and women. It protects individuals from discrimination based on sex primarily in educational programs or programs that are funded by the national government. This applies to vocational, profession and higher education public institutions. Title IX has attracted public attention particularly in the sporting arena. This amendment has had a major effect on intercollegiate sports. With the implementation of Title IX, colleges and universities were forced to create proportional numbers of sports for men and women. They were also forced to provide an equal number of scholarships for men and women. Failure to do so will result in the loss of federal funds.

One thing I would like to uncover through my research is what effect Title IX has had on collegiate athletics in general - both male and female. I would also like to find out how Title IX has impacted women other than athletics. Lastly, I would like to know what improvements have been made since Title IX was first enacted. The articles "The Status of Athletics in Relation To Compliance With Title IX at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1980-1981," "Title IX and Intercollegiate Athletics: The Pursuit of True Gender Equality" and "Title IX, evaluating Equity in Education: A School's guide to implementing the Title IX regulation of the 1972 Education Amendments" will all be helpful in answering any questions I have about the adoption of Title IX.

The people I intend to target are females who have participated in collegiate athletics or are currently participating in sport now. I do no target only those who participate in varsity athletics alone. I believe any female who participates in any intramural sport has also been affected by Title IX as well. I will not limit my target audience solely to athletes because Title IX has affected those in academia as well.
