Grandpa Black
is a live rock band from Chapel Hill. Our goal is to create truly original
music, by drawing as much from our collective musical backgrounds as well
as our own unique ideas of what we want to play. The result is intended to
transcend any one genre of music, but not sound like a patchwork of other,
various forms of music at the same time. We hope you can hear both where we're
coming from and where we're going when you listen.
Grandpa black
formed in the summer of 2001, when guitarist/lead-singer Matt Knouff, bassist
Matt Kuhn and drummer Jacob Tunstall got together in their hometown of Southern
Pines. Grandpa Black began to write original songs and playing out as local
bars. Towards the end of the summer, Erik Aagaard joined as lead guitarist
to balance out the sound. To top off the summer, Grandpa Black took the stage
at the second annual Hugh-fest -- a benefit concert to raise funds for Multiple
Sclerosis victims. At the beginnig of fall, Grandpa Black became the house
band at W.B. Yeats in Chapel Hill, playing weekly shows there, and building
up a fan base. At the end of the year, the band went into Void Studios to
record their first EP release; an eight-song cd entitled "Searching for
a Sign." The band signed with T&P Productions in January of 2002.
Grandpa Black continues to play in Chapel Hill and surrounding areas.
