Brittney Forrister JOMC 050, Lab Section #404, Friday 9:00-11:00 a.m., Carstens How the media’s portrayal of female lawyers has influenced society’s perceptions of women attorneys
Q. What is the difference between a female lawyer and a pit bull? A. Lipstick In today’s society women can do anything. They have the grades, the diplomas, the experience, the energy, and the charm. But there still seems to be standards floating around the workplace concerning the image of a successful woman. Cosmo and Vogue feature brilliantly beautiful women everyday; the attractive styles and figures of models are expected. However, what is the reaction when a blonde swings her hair over her shoulder as she delivers her closing arguments in the courtroom? What obstacles, or maybe advantages, do attractive female attorneys face in their profession today, and how has the new legal dramas on television influenced the perceptions of female attorneys? Furthermore, how has Hollywood in general, from “Adam’s Rib” to “Legally Blonde” molded the idea of the woman lawyer? Next fall, I will be applying to law school. Researching how female attorneys are viewed and treated in their firms, as well as in the courtroom, would be very helpful as I begin to focus much of my energy into the application process. Therefore, my intended audience is anyone interested in the field of law and those who may be evaluating me during the application process.Section I-b: Keywords UNC Libraries women AND attorney* Academic Universe LexisNexis General News, Magazines and Journals (previous 6 months) women (in headline, lead paragraph) AND professionals (in headline, lead paragraph) w/10 law (full text) Legal News, Legal News (previous 6 months) Female (in headline, lead paragraph) AND students (in headline, lead paragraph), w/10 law school (full text) General News, Major Papers (previous year) tv shows (in headline, lead paragraph) AND attorneys (in headline, lead paragraph), w/25 women (full text) Search Engine on Web:< http://google.com> women lawyers in film women (attorneys or lawyers) AND media adams rib legally blonde legal drama Section II: Books, Videotapes and CD-ROMs from UNC-CH libraries Hughes,

Researchers from the U.K.-based security company, mi2g Ltd., claim that at the current growth rate, 2003 is likely to be hit with more than 180,00 digital attacks worldwide; producing an economic damage between $80 and $100 billion for the whole year (1). Researcher’s say that one of the main reasons for the increased virus outbreaks in the past few months is that the traditional anti-virus software isn’t optimised to deal with rapid virus outbreaks efficiently. Viruses have become harder to detect and spread more rapidly than ever (2). In a society that increasingly relies on the internet as a tool for all types of communication, worm viruses are a very serious concern for the new year. Therefore, due to the onslaught of viruses and worms in 2003, many are taking the neccessary precautions to up-date their anti-virus software programs (3). Trend Micro has designed new anti-virus services that provide more information and policy controls that contain damage in the initial stages rather than distributing virus signatures that are often too slow. With this new technology, clients can receive information on how to block attachments and network data that could host potential viruses (3). Along
with updated anti-virus software, governments around the globe are
enforcing tougher penalities for those responsible for creating
viruses and worms. Until now, virus writers and distributors have
receieved light punishments. However, understanding that virus writers
can cause communication and transaction breakdowns all over the
world, court officials have recently enacted more appropriate penalities.
For example, a 2003 will prove to be another exciting year with increased information and services on the internet. However, in this fast-paced world, viruses can put a serious halt, and financial burden, on anyone who utilizes the internet. Taking all the necessary precautions to protect systems from these viruses, as well as advocating strict penalities for those responsible for the viruses, could greatly ensure the internet’s capablilties as a tool for the new millenium.
