Software Evaluation: TuneUp Utilities 2004 |
| Introduction: TuneUp Utilities 2004 is a shareware diagnostics program that gives users one main interface where they can diagnose and fix problems, customize how their windows interfaces look and act, as well as maintain their computer's security by deleting old files with sensitive information (for example) and making sure they cannot be recovered (which is my main focus). This program is meant for users who are less computer savvy, i.e. users who don't know about Windows' built-in defrag capabilities... and users who want to have one central program that can delete files, clean up old registry |
Evaluation and Conclusion: Tuneup Utilities 2004 -when you click on one of the specific programs, like "RescueCenter" which allows users to take back any changes they have made with TuneUp Utilities, a handy helper window pops up every time to help you (like shown below) with useful information about what the program does... and like any good program, TuneUp allows you to stop the pop-up help windows from reappearing unnecessarily. This, to me, makes it a program that anyone can use... and because of its robustness in erasing information, it's the easy and quick tool that even someone in the FBI could use. |
| Can TuneUp Utilities Be Broken? (Can the files be recovered?) - I used TuneUp's file recovery ability to try and recover the same file after having deleted it with the Shredder and making it pass over the file 5 times (with DoD specifications). I was unable to recover the file or any reference to it, which leads me to believe the program works wonders.. because I have used the file recovery program to recover many photos that I deleted (via the not secure recycle bin) months ago accidentally and it still worked. I have no better way to test for a reference of the file, besides using the windows search which came up with nothing. |
