University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Friday Center for Continuing Education “Molecular Biology and Genetics” Summer 2006, 2007. 24 students. Co-taught with Dr. Maria Tsompana.

  • Requested and received departmental approval to resurrect and update a defunct online version of the course. Course update included eukaryotic gene regulation, bioinformatics, genomics, antibiotic resistance and biotechnology modules.
  • Course built around in-depth outline with questions designed to guide students through textbook. Additionally, an active discussion forum was utilized to stimulate discussion, pose questions, etc.

Shaw University, Natural Science Department
“Genetics” Spring 2006. 28 students.

  • Completely redesigned the existing junior-level Genetics course adding bioinformatics, genomics, biotechnology and bioethics modules. Designed course around an active-learning scheme with lab and lecture intertwined throughout class.
  • Designed several computer-based labs to introduce students to concepts of modern forensic and biomedical analysis.

“Bioinformatics” Fall 2006. 3 students.

  • Created new elective on bioinformatics for science upperclassmen.
  • Course featured extensive hands-on experience with common bioinformatic tools including BLAST, Clustal (sequence alignments), and Perl scripting.

“Zoology” Fall 2006. 26 students.

  • Agreed to fill-in for original instructor one week before class began. Taught class with an emphasis on biodiversity and physiology.
