Welcome to Horton Grove.
Horton Grove was name for the Horton family, white yeoman farmers who came down
to North Carolina by way of the Old Indian Trading Path during the 1770s.
The slave cabins that we see here are atypical of the slave cabins one would see
throughout the South. These cabins were constructed under the order of
Paul Cameron, after many of enslaved community were getting sick due to the
horrible living conditions. The sick slaves could not work and were
costing Paul Cameron $2 a day to have a doctor come out and give aid.
Although this is not much in today's standards, this was an excessive amount at
the time, especially on someone that was considered you property. Click on
the door to walk in and check out one of the rooms, or check out the fireplace.
