The LAC program at Carolina provides students—you—with the unique opportunity to apply and improve your language skills and knowledge in a content based environment. In contrast to most traditional language courses where one studies language or literature, LAC courses focus on content in different disciplinary contexts—in our case the History of Latin America Since Independence. You will be using and applying Spanish in our discussion sections and in your written work. As Spanish is our tool rather than our focus in the LAC section, you will not be evaluated on how well you conjugate verbs when speaking in class (which everyone will do a lot!) nor on the grammatical correctness of the assignments you write in Spanish (though things must be understandable). Rather, you will be evaluated based on your contributions to and participation in the discussions (20%), and the quality and timely completion of the writing assignments (30%).
That said, the LAC section of this history course will be a lot of fun. Aside from the fact that you will be able to read interesting stuff in the original Spanish, thus gaining an insightful glimpse into Latin American history, you will be awarded the LAC certificate of completion plus an extra credit hour in Spanish. Moreover, you will be practicing your language skills in a way that will surely benefit you in the future. Whether you enter graduate school, the health profession, or the business world, being able to use/speak Spanish in a variety of contexts is becoming more valuable by the day.
Las clases de discusión están ahí para que USTEDES reflexionen y hablen sobre el contenido histórico estudiado en clase. Por lo tanto, la participación será una parte importante de la nota. Con dicha participación el alumno podrá demostrar sus habilidades lingüísticas y el conocimiento de la materia. Pero además, se pretende que se llegue a la DISCUSIÓN o DIÁLOGO. Para poder conversar, deben también saber ESCUCHAR a sus compañeros así como invitarlos a una conversación.
Para cada semana deberán no sólo leer las lecturas asignadas a los demás grupos, sino TAMBIÉN una lecturas extras, en español, que se proporcionarán a través de mi página web.
Cada semana deberán también añadir sus comentarios en blackboard. Respondiendo a una cuestión o tarea en concreto, deberán elegir una cita y escribir entre 50 y 75 palabras comentando dicha cita. La cita la escribirán en la lengua en la que la hayan leído. El comentario en ESPAÑOL. Por favor, traigan una copia impresa de su aportación. Así, será más fácil trabajar en clase. La participación y la aportación en blackboard supondrá un 20% de la nota final.
El resto de la tarea escrita consistirá en tres ensayos, de cinco páginas cada uno, como respuesta a sus lecturas de Life in Mexico, The Slum y Whispering in the Giant's Ear . El último se entregará el día del examen final. Los otros dos se entragarán el 16 de febrero y 23 de marzo. Todos se escribirán en español. Cada ensayo equivaldrá a un 10% de la nota final.
