Sports Betting

Introduction:

The focus of my research project was to find out more about the problem of sports betting. It was very interesting because I found out how big of a problem betting on sports is, and where it goes on the most. It was a very specific search and was sometimes hard to find information. However, the information I found was very in-depth. The World Wide Web was very useful. Some of my best sources came from the Web.

WWW Sources:

  • Serious Sports Gambling
    URL: "http://haven.uniserve.com/~swammi/swammi.htm"
This is a great place to find valuable information on sports betting. It gave a lot of general information on gambling and sports. Sports betting is a big problem in today's society.

  • Dangerous Sports Betting
    URL: "http://www.bogo.co.uk/city/test/cityspoc.htm"
This is another great informative source on sports betting. It is a very different kind of source. It explains the seriousness of sports betting. It can become a serious problem and is very addictive.
  • General Sports Betting
    URL: "http://www.gamblersbook.com/sport.htm"
This source is a very valuable source for finding information on sports betting. It is a lot like the first source. It has a ot of general information on sports gambling. It talks about the different types of sports betting as well.

    Other Reference Sources:

  • Hammel, Paul. "Video Keno Machines, Sports Betting Proposed." Omaha World Herald (18 January 1996). Sunrise edition, News, p.13SF. Online. Available: NEXIS Library: NEXIS File: Curnews
This was a decent source on sports betting. It dealt more with the electronic way of sports betting. It talked about different methods of sports betting.
  • Sauerwein, Kristina. "Superbowl All the Hype Can Blind-Side Sports Bettors." St. Louis Post Dispatch (14 January 1996). Five Star Lift Edition, News, p.1A. Online. Available: NEXIS Library: NEXIS File: Curnews
This is a great article on sports betting. It tells people that people get caught up in all the hype of gambling. They get in serious trouble. People get addicted and cannot stop.
  • Skoneki, Mark. "Titan's Turns Sports Betting Into A Deadly Game." Chicago Tribune (27 October 1994). Du Page Sports Final Edition, Tempo, p.3. Online. Available: NEXIS Library: NEXIS File: Books
This is another source on the seriousness of sports gambling. Anyone can become involved. It is much more addictive than many people believe, and most people do not know when they have a problem. It is similar to a drug addiction.

  • Sudetic, Chuck. "Police Arrest 26 in Raids On 14 Gambling Operations." New York Times (29 January 1996). Late Edition, Section B, p.3. Online. Available: NEXIS Library: NEXIS File: Curnews
This is a story on the possibilities of what can happen to a person involved in gambling. It is a crime, and people get in serious trouble for it. The police make some big busts on certain operations.
  • U.S. Congress. Senate. Committee on the Judiciary. Professional and amateur sports protection. Washington, D.C.: GPO, 1991. Available at Davis Library.
This is a completely different type of source. It is a Federal Document that talks about the problem of sports betting. It gives valuable information on the protection sports receive from the problem of sports betting.

  • General comments

    • The difference between WWW sources and print sources is that WWW sources can be accessed much easier and much faster than print sources. One can read them from home instead of having to go to the library to retreive them for use.
    • To collect more information for my topic, I would prefer WWW sources because they are so easy to access. I can get to them faster and much easier than I can get to print sources. Plus, they are more colorful and interesting than print sources.
