He was 82 years old and died of natural causes. Widely respected for his work in aesthetics, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of language, he was an accomplished painter whose work was exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum, the Peggy Guggenheim Gallery, and the Artist's Gallery in New York, and an avid tennis player.
