Description of datasets

The Chapel Hill 2002 expert survey on party positioning on European integration covers 171 parties in 23 of the 25 current EU member states (not Luxembourg and Estonia) as well as in Bulgaria and Romania. The survey was administered between September 2002 and April 2003 to 636 academics specializing in parties, European integration, or closely related topics in one of the countries considered.

Principal investigators of the 2002 survey are Liesbet Hooghe, Gary Marks, Marco Steenbergen and Milada Vachudova.

The Marks/Steenbergen/Ray dataset combines the following:
1) An expert survey conducted by Leonard Ray for the years 1984, 1988, 1992 and 1996
2) An expert survey conducted by Gary Marks and Marco Steenbergen for 1999.

To facilitate merging the 2002 dataset with the combined Ray/Marks/Steenbergen dataset we make party id and variable names for identical questions consistent across datasets (see codebook). Where questions are not identical we use different variable names.
