Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if I am interested in participating?

If you think you might be interested in participating in a study, then you should call our lab at (919) 962-2124. If no one answers, please leave your name and phone number on our answering maching and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

What should I expect when I call the lab?

When you call the lab, we will first briefly describe the study we are currently conducting. Then we will ask if you are still interested in participating. If you are, then we will need to ask you a short list of questions over the telephone. These are questions about your demographic information (age, education level, etc.) and your health. If you meet the criteria for the current study, then we will try to find a date and time when you would be available to participate in the study. We typically schedule participants between the hours of 9:00AM and 2:00PM on weekdays.

Are there any conditions that would prevent me from participating?

Yes, there are some medical and psychological conditions that may prevent you from participating in some of our studies. We will ask you about some of these conditions when we speak to you on the phone.

How do I get to the lab? And where do I park?

We are located in Davie Hall on the UNC campus. Davie Hall is next to the Arboretum on Cameron Avenue, near the corner of Raleigh Street and Cameron Avenue. If you need more detailed directions, click here. There is a brick service road between Davie Hall and the Arboretum. Turn onto this service road and on your left you will see three parking spaces reserved for "Psychology Subjects". One of our lab associates will meet you in this area with a parking pass. Click here for more detailed directions and maps.

What should I expect when I get to Davie Hall?

After you park, the lab associate will bring you to one of our lab rooms on the second floor. At that time, you will answer some questions about yourself and then the instructions for the study will be expained to you in detail. You will get plenty of practice on the tasks before the testing officially begins. When you finish practicing, you will participate in the actual study. Short breaks will be provided at various points throughout the session. At the conclusion of the session, the lab associate will ask you several more questions and you may be asked to fill out a few pen-and-paper questionnaires. We will talk with you about the goal of the study you just participated in, and answer any questions you may have. At that point, you will receive your payment for participation and the lab associate will escort you back to your car.

Who will I meet when I get to the lab?

Currently, we have several research assistants and graduate students working on our studies. Click here to find out more about our lab members. You will meet one of these people when you get to the lab.

How long do typical sessions last?

Every study is different in this regard, but sessions are usually between 45 minutes and 2 hours long. For the longer studies, frequent breaks are provided.

How much will I get paid for participating?

You will get paid between $10 and $25 per session, depending on the duration of the study. This is a token of our appreciation for your willingness to take the time to help us with our research. We also provide reimbursement for travel expenses.

Will I find out the results of the study?

Not right away. At the conclusion of the session, the lab associate will tell you about the purpose of the study and the predictions we have for the results. We periodically send out a newsletter updating you on the progress and results of our research. Click here to read our most recent newsletter.
