North Carolina Technology Competencies Workshop: K-12
Dates: June 26 through July 11, 1997
This is a workshop sponsored by the UNC Summer School and the UNC Center for Mathematics and Science Education.
What? EDUC 100: A Workshop on "Meeting the North Carolina Computer Competencies."
When? The course will meet from June 26 through July 11, 1997, from 1:15 to 4:00 P.M., weekdays. There will be no class on July 4.
Where? The class will meet in the computer classroom in room 324 Phillips Hall on the UNC Chapel Hill campus.
Credit: Three semester hours which will count toward renewal of both "A" and "G" certificates.
Instructor: Dr. Hunter Ballew, Professor of Education at UNC-Chapel Hill
Description: The course will be built around the state competencies that will be required of teachers and students at all grade levels. The instructor will introduce several pieces of software. These will include data bases, spreadsheets, HyperStudio, MicroWorlds, the Internet, and some CD-ROMs. Data bases are useful to all teachers for record keeping. Spreadsheets can be used to examine statistical data in elementary grades, in social studies, in mathematics, and in science. HyperStudio is a multimedia program useful in elementary school and in all middle school and high school subjects. MicroWorlds is a multimedia program useful in elementary school and in all middle school and high school mathematics classes. The uses of the Internet in instruction are great and growing constantly. CD-ROMs have all sorts of specialized instructional uses.
Assignment: The main assignment for the workshop will be for each participant, or for a group of two or three participants, to design and demonstrate a project using one of the demonstrated pieces of software.

1. to review the North Carolina technology competencies for students in grades K-12
2. to provide experiences with software and activities that can help students in grades K-12 develop those competencies
