| NC Legislators, University administrators, and North Carolina students and residents: We, as members of The University of North Carolina System, understand the invaluable opportunities for positive intellectual and personal development enabled by attending college. We believe that all qualified high school students should have the opportunity to access higher education. North Carolina took a step forward this past year by ensuring that all students could gain admission to our N.C. Community College System regardless of immigration status. This is an advancement that will not only benefit immigrant students and their families, but will also have countless positive impacts on our state's workforce and economy. We firmly oppose any legislation that would prevent qualified high school students from attending college based solely on their immigration status. Restrictive legislation would systematically foster a permanent underclass of residents in North Carolina placing our state at the national forefront of legalized discrimination. No other state currently bars undocumented students from attending college. More than ever before, a well-educated, well-developed workforce is necessary to carry North Carolina forward economically and socially. Bright, driven young people who are graduating from North Carolina high schools should be able to realize their dreams to become doctors who will heal our families, to become teachers who can educate our children, and to become healthy, productive individuals ready to contribute to our state's success in an increasingly dynamic, globalized economy. As the Coalition for College Access, a growing group of students and other stakeholders across the UNC school system, we believe that qualified young people who are allowed to fulfill their academic and personal goals will not only benefit themselves and their families, but will add value to the state of North Carolina. Please join us in realizing this dream, for all of our futures. Sincerely, The Coalition for College Access
