canyons, lakes, and lots of salt

here's lissa on the edge of the quebrada de jere, the canyon we visited on our tour. it's pretty crazy; all around is desert, but down in the canyon it's lush and green. they actually have some huertillos (mini fruit orchards) down in there.

a different view of the canyon.

clara perched at the top of the canyon.

anjni and jane descending down the trail to the canyon floor.

a cool rock face. it's really huge, so i'm kind of disappointed that there's nothing in there to show the scale.

now we're in a little village called toconao, inside the church. it was pretty neat, all old-fashioned looking and such, and the brightly colored blurs you see in the foreground are three little girls who were "cleaning"...aka flinging water at each other. it was quite cute.

another picture from toconao, this time of the bell tower in the middle of the plaza. i think that's matt there in shadow in front of it.

that's a lot of salt there (though it's dusty and dirty), and in the background, an active volcano. awesome.

more salt, a lake, and some flamingos.

lissa and anjni, chilling out on the salt flats.

waiting around for sunset at an observation point on the salt flats.

me, at sunset. the colors are insane. photo credits to anjni, and unfortunately, crooked scan credits go to me.

more from sunset.
