Sociology 110, Prof. Aldrich, Assignment for September 29th
One person in each team
should view one of the following four videos at the Undergraduate Library and come to class prepared to explain to teammates the
main themes of the video
(more instruction will be handed out in class). Only two people at a time
can view a video in the library.
What to do in your teams:
1. Summarize for team members the plot of your video and how you can interpret what you saw, using course concepts
2. Question others about their positions (in a constructive way)
3. Work on a tentative outline (but each person writes own paper)
Criteria for Assessment of 2-page Paper due on Thursday, Oct. 1:
1. Clear opening and closing statements of paper's theme (need an opening
paragraph and a closing paragraph)
2. Assumptions clearly stated
3. Includes references to all four videos
4. Uses information from course readings & class discussion to support arguments (specific page citations NOT necessary - just mention the author's name)
5. Opinions backed up with evidence
6. Works from a consistent framework - not just a review but also a point of view
7. Appropriate grammar & spelling
8. Graded on a 100 point scale - Copy edit and proof read the paper
Concepts & Principles for Paper (no need for ALL of them!):
1. See the summary from last class of 7 concepts
2. What does it take to be a good manager? (homosocial reproduction, style, team player, etc.)
3. What conditions reduce firms' abilities to objectively know who is a good manager, or who would make a good manager? (uncertainty, need for trust)
4. Whom do we trust?
5. Organizations as opportunity structures (entry port, promotion chains, bridges, mobility barriers, ceilings, wrong routes)
6. Can women be "good" managers, according to these criteria?
