The Derm Bulls have always been a piecemeal assembly of Faculty, Residents, Staff, Students and Significant Others that somehow are linked to UNC Hospitals and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Our composition has always been well biased to the Departments of Dermatology and Pathology.
Anyhow, to my recollection, the current Bulls team came mainly from a late Eighties team named the Biohazards. In either 1991 or 1992, many graduations and defections resulted in a mutation that formed the Bulls. For any of the people from West Virginia, Arkansas or Cali, the name is a play on the "southern" pronunciation of Durham (aka the Durham Bulls, now the AAA team of the Devil Rays, thank god, the Braves suck). Henceforth, a new power grew in the ranks of Co-rec softball supremacy!
The Derm Bulls are lead fearlessly by their honorary and legendary Captain, Dr. Al Briggaman. Beside being Chairman of the Department of Dermatology and most recently awarded the , he is simply the best damn pitcher in the league and has more determination to win than all of us put together.
In recent years, the Bulls have won 4 league championships (94, 95, 96, 97) and 3 tournament championships (94, 96, 97). We should be the odds on favorite to threepeat, but a couple mainstay losses to relocation and graduation will test us. Many claimed that our team is stacked with ringers or "professional" athletes, sorry to say, actually, that's so far from true it almost isn't funny.
No, our secret is simple, we come to play hard, that's how we have fun, Defense, playing together, laughing a lot, having a beverage or 10 afterwards, yep, 98 sounds like a good year. New people, new UNIs and the same attitude.. Don't think we don't like seeing that little engraving on that plaque in the Hospital.
