Professional: Zachary Taylor Smith professor in political science at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, and Chair in Multilevel Governance at the Free University Amsterdam.
From 2007 to 2009 also Chair of the European Union Studies Association, which is the largest professional association for EU studies specialists. Research: I am a comparativist with a strong interest in inter-national relations and in public administration/ public policy. My interests lie at the intersection between international, national, and subnational politics and society. My interest in multilevel governance, shared with my longtime life companion and co-author Gary Marks, leads me to investigate why and how authority is dispersed across multiple levels of authority. How does this affect interests, identities, and preferences? Our work conceives of the European Union as an advanced example of multilevel governance, but this interest in multilevel governance takes us also beyond Europe and the European Union to study subnational and international authority across the globe. I have a longstanding interest in ethnic conflict, nationalism, and federalism. Teaching: Political Science, European Studies and International Studies at UNC and at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Over the past years, undergraduate teaching has included seminars on European Integration, US-EU relations, and West european politics, as well as lecture courses on European Politics, Institutional approaches, and Global Issues.
