God bless Peter Gammons
Now that the non-waiver trade deadline has passed, Peter Gammons can finally breathe again. But did you see him on Baseball Tonight on the days leading up to the deadline? He would bring his cell phone on the set, talk trade rumors and generally be giddy. Wouldn't it be great to be at the top of your field and still be happy?

In Moneyball (I promise the review is coming soon), Billy Beane is noted as considering Peter Gammons the only member of the media he'll ever talk to about the trade deadline and the amateur draft. And the reason he gave was that Gammons could actually tell him something he doesn't know.

That's because he knows everything. Gammons (proud UNC alum) spends parts of each summer in Cape Cod checking out the college talent in the Cape League. One of my neighbors, who was an assistant coach on the Wareham team, goes up to him and introduces himself, adding that Gammons had met his brother (who pitched at Carolina) at a UNC alumni weekend. Not only did Gammons remember him, but he went on to talk baseball for half an hour, talking about stuff like the 15-year-old Cuban lefty who would be the next Randy Johnson in 10 years.

Who knows that? Peter Gammons, that's who.
