Criticism

Marowski, D.G. & Matuz, R. (Ed.). Contemporary Literary Criticism (vol. 54). Detroit: Gale Research, 1989.

[Davis Library Reference Collection Row 4 PN771 .C59 v. 54)

Nine critics weigh in on Mervyn Peake's literary legacy, primarily focusing on the three Gormenghast novels. This collection of criticism provides lucid insight into Peake's creative process and portrays the diversity of positive and negative commentary on Peake's work. The wide range of commentary reflects how Mervyn Peake, even to this day, remains an artist who has confounded the public and scholars alike.

The Mervyn Peake Society publishes the journal The Mervyn Peake Review which at the present time is not available online or through print media anywhere close to the Triangle region of North Carolina. While gaining access to the scholarship in numerous issues of the journal would prove to be very time consuming, this single book consists of 10 excellent articles solicited to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Mervyn Peake's death. This is the sole element to this pathfinder not accessible in the local libraries, but I felt that part of a journal central to Mervyn Peake scholarship should be noted.
