"An island where life was lived at a tempo unmolested by cleverness." Maeve Gilmore

This book provides a geographic companion to the lives of prominent British and Irish authors and their literary characters. Mervyn Peake doesn't figure prominently in this work, but the maps work wonders concerning an integral part to Peake's life: the Channel Island of Sark. Upon locating this tiny island (only 3 miles by 1 mile in size predominantly bordered by precipitous cliffs) in the English Channel, much closer to France than England, one gets a sense of Peake's isolation from society and technology during some of the most productive and personally satisfying years of his life.
