Print and Web Design
I have a passion for communicating information. Both in my scientific work and my life I seek to find creative and eye-catching ways to get my point across. I have done a bit of visual design, both for print and web, in my spare time. For print I am most comfortable working in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. For web, I am comfortable with HTML and CSS. Here are a few samples of my visual design work.

Tall-tree Hunting
In May of 2010, my father Steve and I used LiDAR data to find the tallest known deciduous tree in temperate North America, located in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The tree, a Tuliptree which we christened Agidoda ("my father" in the Cherokee language) is 191.9 feet tall. You can read more about the tree and the climbing expedition that measured its height here .
Since that time I've been interested in using ecological modeling and remote-sensing tools to assist in the search for the largest trees in North America. I recently demonstrated that the ecological niche of extremely large (>180ft) trees in Great Smoky Mountains National Park is surprisingly narrow.
