Personal Background:

I was Born near Krakow, Poland in 1980. My parents left Poland shortly after martial law was imposed, taking my sister and me, in tow, to our new home in New Jersey. We later moved to Hickory, North Carolina when my father received a professorship at a small, parochial college. I attended St. Stephens High School in Hickory before matriculating to UNC-CH.

I enjoy writing, photography and, for two years in high school, I played league hockey, after I got it into my head that I might have some athletic ability worth cultivating.

I'm involved in several campus groups - Students United for a Responsible Global Environment (or SURGE), a network of student activists, and the Campaign to End the Death Penalty are among the most notable.  I'm also treasurer for the Catalyst, a literary magazine for students at UNC-CH.

One of my most rewarding experiences was a trip to Iraq in January, 2001. I went there with a delegation that documented the effects of UN sanctions on the country's population. Under its auspices, I was able to interview medical professionals at local hospitals and teachers at two primary schools. I also spoke with UN representatives from the World Health Organization and the Food and Agriculture Organization about the success of their services in Iraq.
