The Library
Index
This website is intended to be "a worldwide directory of library
homepages, web-based OPACs,
Friends of the Library pages, and library e-commerce affiliate
links." Under each country, the library listings are divided into
sections: Academic, Government, National and Special. Only the name of
the library, which is an active link, is provided under each
heading. When the link is clicked on, the user is brought to a page
giving the name, city, country, library type, home page URL, and web
catalog URL. From this page, you can get to the actual library
webpages. It is not clear how often this website is updated. The only
date I could find was the copyright 2000 at the bottom of each page. This
leads me to assume that the site has not been changed since sometime
during the year 2000. Also, at least one of the cities given as
a location is incorrect. However, all the links do still work so the
correct information can be found.
LibWib: Library Servers via
WWW
This website was created and is maintained by the Berkeley Digital
Library. It is a project that lists libraries in countries all over the
world. The website is updated every day at midnight, Pacific
time. After searching for a country, the results page provides three
pieces of information, the name of the library and two links. The first
button link says "Connect". This takes you to the webpage of the
library. The second button says "Info". This takes you to another page
within LibWeb which lists the name and type of library, the URL, as well
as the date that the page was added to the database, and best of all, the
date that the link was last checked.
World Directory of
Parliamentary Libraries
This site is put together by a German organization. For the parliamentary
library of each country included, some basic explanatory information is
given. The information is divided up into several sections: Name,
Address, Details on the Library, Publications by the Library, Publications
Concerning the Library, and Parliamentary Documents. A URL and other
contact information are provided when available. The site has not been
updated since early 1999 so some of the information may
be different today.
United Nations
Depository Libraries
This website provides a list with links to depository libraries that
receive materials from the United Nations. The list is alphabetical by
country. There is also a link to an introductory page that describes what
the depository libraries receive, what the requirements of a depository
library are, what the information on each page will mean, as well as a
contact address for questions or suggestions. There are also links to
sites that provide further information about United Nations depository
libraries. The site was last updated in May of 2001.
World Wide Web Library
Directory
This website provides links to libraries and library-related websites in
130 countries around the world. There are three main headings on the home
page: US, Countries (not including the US) and Library Related. When a
country is clicked on, the link takes you to a page listing all of the
libraries within that country that are included in the database. The only
information provided is the name of the library, which is an active link.
No other information about the country or library is given. Each page
also has a last updated date on it. The dates seem to vary from 1999 to
2001. All of the links that I tested still worked.
UNESCO Libraries
Portal
Through this website it is possible to search under several
categories: Library Websites, Library Associations and Networks,
Librarianship, etc. If you choose Library Websites you then get further
choices such as: Academic, Government, National, Public, United Nations,
etc. From there you can get to the countries whose listings are
available. For each library found, a sentence or two description of the
library or the website is often provided, as well as the link to the site.
University
of Idaho List of Polish Libraries
This listing provides two options. For each library listed, the
University of Idaho
has created an informational webpage. For
some of the libraries listed, a link to the Polish website is
available. Some work, some do not, some are in English, most are
not. The pages created by the University offer some very useful
information including the location and specialty of the library, the name
of an English-speaking librarian, details about the collection, services
and policies. Although the main page appears to be regularly updated, many
of the library informational pages were created in 1996.
