National Libraries

National Library of Romania
The National Library was formed under its current name and functions in 1990 although it has been in existence since 1836. The library is made up of fourteen buildings in Bucharest and throughout the rest of the country. Overall, the library's holdings are over eight million including many rare and old items. This webpage does not provide much more information beyond the history and holdings, location, contact names and numbers, and hours of operation.

Romanian Academy Library
This is a national repository library which has existed since 1867. Its holdings now number over ten million items. This number includes one of the best collections of manuscripts in Romania. Old maps, prints, audio-visual, musical scores and drawings are also part of the special collections. There is a link to the online catalog which can search three different library databases. A gallery of items in the special collections is available for viewing. In terms of more practical detail, several pages are currently under construction but the location, email and phone number are all on the home page. There is also a page with links to other libraries both in Romania and abroad.

University Libraries

Central University Library
It is apparent from the "Library in Images" link that this is a beautiful old library. This is a well organized, user-friendly, up-to-date website. The library has over two million items including many old and rare books and manuscripts. Some of these have been digitized and are available for viewing from a link on the home page. These have explanations in English. The Central Library is part of a network including twelve branch libraries throughout the university. The branches are divided into three main categories: the Exact Sciences, the Human Sciences and the Social Sciences. There are links to each branch but none are active at the moment.

Library of Sibiu University
This website does not provide a lot of information on the library but does give some of the necessary practical details such as location, contact information, departmental and branch information. It seems that there are eight branch libraries but only two of them have working links to their webpages. There is a page with "Useful Links" including links to international newspapers, links regarding Romanian literature and publications and computer information links. Most of the site was last updated in mid 2000.

University of Medicine and Pharmacy
This is a well-organized and easy to use website which was created sometime in 2001. Since over half of it seems to be under construction, perhaps it is still in the process of being created. The pages that are already up provide detailed explanations of the library policy and access; there is a complete list of journals received by the library as well as access to several databases. Contact information and hours of operation are posted as well.

Technical University of Isai
This library was established in 1937 and since then has been dedicated to providing technical books, journals and other information to the university community. The library has over 900,000 items, most of them having to do with engineering, technology, science, economics and law. There are five branch libraries connected to certain departments. The location and contact information for each one can be found on this website. There is a page showing the access statistics for the library which is updated daily. This is interesting because it shows not only how many users came to the site, but there are tables showing more specific statistics. There is a library images section but the images are extremely slow to download. A list of links to other libraries in Romania can be reached from the "Web Resources" link.

Public Libraries

Octavian Goga Library
This is the central library for the Cluj-Napoca municipality. Within that municipality are about eighty other town or community libraries. This site has not been updated since 1996 but all of the links still work and hopefully the location, email address and phone numbers have not changed. This page is really only useful for gathering some basic structural information on the library.
