Library of the
Hungarian Academy of Sciences
This library was founded in 1826 in Budapest. In 1867 it was opened to
the general public. The current hours of operation,
locations and contact information for the different departments are
listed. Some of the best pages on the website are the Special Collections
pages. They contain beautiful images and detailed explanations about
several of the most important collections and how they became a part of the
library. There is also a wonderful image gallery where digitized pages from
old books and documents can be viewed.
National Szechenyi Library
The objective of the Szechenyi Library "is to collect, to process, to
preserve and to provide access to the Hungarian written cultural heritage
and the written cultural heritage related to the Hungarian history from the
manuscript codex through the printed documents to the electronic
publications." The library boasts Hungarian books since 1712 and books from
other countries since 1601 as well as newspapers and periodicals. Count
Szechenyi, a great collector of
books, founded the library in 1802. Today the library contains over seven
million items. The website
provides useful information on the collections and history of the library as
well as practical details such as addresses and hours of operation.
John von
Neumann Digital Library
This website is being included in this digital library despite the fact that
most of the information on it is not available yet in English. It is being
included because of the international importance of the project that it is
involved in. It is participating in the attempt to digitize as much of
the Hungarian national heritage as possible in order to make the materials
available through the internet.
National Agricultural Library
and Documentation Center
This library is located in the center of Budapest. It specializes in
scientific literature, particularly relating to agriculture. The library is
also a depository for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United
Nations. The library contains about 500,000 items with the largest
collection of agricultural materials in Hungary. The library has an online
catalog as well as two agricultural databases that it compiled. There is
also a listing and description of the publications that the
library is involved in. The website provides contact information
and hours of operation.

Library of the Central European
University
This library is geared towards the university community but is available
for use by the general public as well. The rules for becoming a member
are available on the website along with descriptions of other policies and
regulations. The collection focuses on the social sciences, including
philosophy, international relations, economics, gender studies and
environmental studies. Over 80% of the more than 120,000 holdings are in
English! This is a detailed website, providing much useful
information. There is no date on the website so it may not be up-to-date.
University of Szeged
Library
This university website is well organized and up-to-date. Not all of
the links are available in English but most of the practical information
has been translated. The location and contact information and hours of
operation are posted. The history of the library and its place in the
university are available as well. Unfortunately, the collection
information is not in English so it may be necessary to send an email to
find out what the collection contains. There are also pages that are only
accessible by students and faculty at the university.
Kenezy Library
This is the library for the Faculty of Medicine at the University of
Debrecen. The website provides a good deal of useful information including
the address and hours of operation. The policies, regulations and services
are clearly stated. There are also links to many medical, scientific and
informational databases, online catalogs and electronic journals.

Jozsef Katona Public
Library
This library is located in Kecskemét, Hungary. Besides the general
collection, this library also has collections focusing on Local Studies,
Music, Historical and Europe. The Local Studies collection contains
materials
relating to the Bács-Kiskun County. The European collection has materials
in foreign languages. Most of the Historical collection was destroyed
during World War II. Although the website does not seem to have been
updated since 1999, all of the links still work and directional
information is there.
The Somogyi Library
This library in Szeged was founded in about 1880 when Karoly Somogyi donated
his library containing over 40,000 volumes to the city. Today the library
has well over 800,000 volumes and is the central library for nineteen
branches throughout the city. It is a five-story library housing several
different collections including one which contains only materials dating
before 1800. The only contact information given on this webpage is an
email address. The hours of operation are posted as well as descriptions
of what is on each floor of the library.
