Steve Hutson, Instructor

Steve Hutson (sitting) instructs Senpai Keith Sikes during a recent belt test.

In 1981, the year that Carolina Kyokushin Karate was founded, a young administrator joined the staff of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  He had pursued his personal training in a variety of martial arts forms during and after graduate school, finding that he was continually drawn towards Karate.

As Steve Hutson began his work as Assistant Dean for Leadership Development at the University, he searched the area for a Karate Dojo in which to continue his training.  Upon meeting Dr. Choi in a Carolina Kyokushin workout, he was impressed with the quality and demands of the physical training.  He then deliberately set aside his current belt to wear a white belt and learn the Kyokushin Way.

With all of the early Senpai, he strived to confront his weaknesses, challenge his strengths, and cultivate a true Karate spirit. Of those early workouts he says, "Many times we ran for miles at full speed, each striving to best our last time and hurting with every motion because of it.  But the result was exhilarating!"  The Carolina Kyokushin workouts progressed as the early Senpai supported one another through them and shared their strengths with one another.  In an early belt test Mr. Hutson pleased his instructor by completing 100 continuous two-knuckle pushups, even though such a feat was only   required several belts higher.  Though he is rumored to have progressed substantially beyond that number in private, he doesn't say since there is not a videotape record of it.

He and the other Senpai enjoyed giving many Carolina Kyokushin demonstrations together, breaking stacks of boards, baseball bats with their shins, and thick, multiple ice-blocks strapped together.  Mr. Hutson had completed two black belts and began a third when the golden opportunity to integrate Carolina Kyokushin into the international Karate Organization came. With deep respect he again removed his belt and accepted a training belt so that he could learn from the highly respected Shihan Katsuhito Gorai, to whom he was assigned by the International Kyokushin leadership.

Of his first meeting with Shihan Gorai, Mr. Hutson says "I felt like I had walked into my Karate home, and that feeling has only increased as I have learned from Shihan and watched him instruct our students and Senpai."  Mr. Hutson is now certified through Tokyo headquarters to teach Kyokushin and works closely with Shihan Gorai to construct a challenging, individualized workout program that closely corresponds to the International guidelines.

When asked about the successes of Carolina Kyokushin Karate, Mr. Hutson speaks highly of the current Senpai and says simply, "All of us is greater than one of us".
