EM Photos: ICP8 Recombination

The Herpes Simplex type 1 virus provides a superb eukaryotic system for studying the details of DNA replication in human cells. The ICP8 protein of HSV-1 is essential for replication and plays a role both as a single strand binding protein and as a recA-like recombinase. In this micrograph ICP8 is bound to single strand DNA and arranges it into a structure similar to a telephone receiver cord. In this structure it is able to catalyze the annealing of two homologous single strand DNA.
