Gökhan Tolun

Postdoctoral Research Associate

I have joined this lab in January 2008. Since then, I was involved in many projects several of which resulted in publications. Currently, I am focusing on my two main projects: One of them is a 3D structure reconstruction project, and the other is a T4 replication project involving single-molecule assay systems.

I obtained my B.S. degree in Biology from METU (Middle East Tecnhical University) in Ankara, Turkey in 1995. I obtained my M.S. degree in Biotechnology from the same university in 1999, after completing my thesis work titled "Characterization of Aspergillus oryzae transformed with a plasmid carrying alpha-amylase gene" under the supervision of Dr. Ufuk Gündüz. After starting the Ph.D. program in Biology in METU, and almost completing my coursework, in 2000 I decided to come to US to join a Ph.D. program (which meant retaking the coursework). I was accepted to University of Miami, School of Medicine, Dept. of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in year 2000, and worked with my mentor Dr. Richard S. Myers on my thesis dissertation titled "More than the sum of its parts: Physical and mechanistic coupling in the phage lambda red recombinase". After defending my dissertation, I earned my Ph.D. degree in 2007. In addition to my degrees, having served as a teaching assitant in METU between 1995-2000, I have 5 years of teaching experience.
