Mere Christianity Bible Study – We Have Cause to be Uneasy
Summary – Lewis gives three reasons to consider religion as a means to satisfy the guilt imposed by the moral law
I. Humanity is on the wrong road. The quicker we turn around and go back, the closer we will be to making progress,
II. Somebody or Something is behind the moral law
A. Two bits of evidence of Somebody
1. The universe he has made
a. we conclude: he is a great artist
b. he is quite merciless and no friend to man
2. Moral Law which he has put in our hands
a. we conclude, God is "good", but not soft -> do the right thing no matter what
b. he is an "absolute goodness"
c. "we cannot do without is, and we cannot do with it"
B. you learn more about God from the Moral Law than from the universe in general just as you find out more about a man by listening to his conversation than by looking at a house he has built.
III. "When you know you are sick, you will listen to the doctor"-> Christianity will explain
A. After realizing there is a real Moral Law, and a Power behind the law, and that you have broken that law, and put yourself wrong with that power à Christianity begins to make sense (reason for repenting/needing forgiveness)
B. Has lead you to view as a religion so you will understand the questions that face Christianity, and Christianity will provide answers for these questions.
IV. Questions
1. Do you think humanity is still on the wrong road?
2. Lewis states that if God is like the moral law, he is not soft or sentimental. Why is this shocking? What else points to the existence of God other than the moral law?
3. Christianity will not make sense until you realize what?
4. What is meant in the final paragraph with "In religion, as in war and everything else, comfort is the one thing you cannot get by looking for it. If you look for truth, you may find comfort in the end: if you look for comfort you will not get either comfort or truth – only soft soap and wishful thinking to begin with and, in the end dispair."
