My little sister Elaine and I during her recent visit to Chapel Hill. Elaine is a graduating senior who plans to attend University of Texas-Austin this fall -- hook'em, Elaine!

Elaine, my youngest sister Kelly and I during a recent family vacation to Hawaii. We're pictured here at a Polynesian cultural center. (yes, we learned how to luau)

friends

theroommates
This is the greatest roommate story ever: meet Lydia and Anna (two brunettes in the middle), twin sisters who grew up in Apex, NC. Lydia decides to attend NC State and Anna decides to attend UNC-Chapel Hill. After both going potluck, Lydia gets Andrea (left end) as a roommate and Anna gets me as a roommate. The kicker -- Andrea and I both live on the same street in Austin! We attended the same high school, took the same classes and happened to get twin sisters as our college roommates! We're pictured here at the Angus Barn, during Lydia and Anna's surprise 20th birthday party.
mtbonnell
This past spring break, Anna and Lydia came to visit Andrea and I in Austin. We're pictured here with Keri (Andrea and Lydia's roommate) and Lisa (an Austin high school friend) on top of Mount Bonnell, Austin's oldest inactive volcano and highest point of elevation. Although you can't see it from here, Mount Bonnell offers a great 360 degree view of the city!
180
Kellie, Hagin and I at 180, a campus-wide Christian revival event held at Polk Place. These ladies have been my incredible role models of God-fearing women and talented journalists.

washington policy semester
august -- december 2002

DCgalsPotomac
Meet the DC gals (l-r) -- Heather, me, Katie, Celia and Amanda (all UNC students) During my Washington Policy Semester, we bonded as roommates and accumulated too many crazy stories to tell. Even though our semester in DC ended, we still find time to hang out with each other in Chapel Hill and reminisce. This was a picture taken during our first week in DC, by the Potomac River in Georgetown -- the Kennedy Center is in the background.
DCpeopleZed's
The DC gals plus Wesley and Seth at Zed's, an Ethiopian restaurant in Georgetown. I know "Ethiopian restaurant" sounds like an oxymoron, but the food was actually delicious! Because you don't eat Ethiopian food with silverware, we ate by scooping up food with spongy pancake bread.
Potomackayaking
Celia, Katie and I kayaking on the Potomac River in Georgetown. After an hour of rowing, I discovered I am very good at going in circles.
WoodleyParkmetrostop
Katie and I posing beside the metro stop of our beloved home for four months -- Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan.
Supreme Court
Celia, Heather and I standing in front of the Supreme Court building in DC. We arrived at early in the morning to sit in on the Supreme Court case regarding Megan's Law, legislation that requires any paroled sex offender to register their contact information into an online database.
DCmonumentwinter
Katie and I standing in front of the Washington Monument during late November. We were on our way to see the president's annual Christmas tree dedication. It was a frigid few hours sitting on frigid fold-out chairs, but it was still kind of cool to see the huge Christmas tree light up!

thailand missions trip
july 2002

Thailandmissionsteam
Meet the summer 2002 Youth With A Mission Thailand team. During July 2002, I went on an amazing missions trip to Thailand with about 15 college students from my home church in Austin. Our team conducted ministry with a variety of people rangin from from the monks in temples of Bangkok and people from the Karen hill tribe to English day camp students and prostitutes in Chiang Mai's bar district. We're pictured here on top of a temple overlooking the city of Bangkok. (I'm standing in the back row, second person from the right.)
Englishdaycamp
Our missions team had the opportunity to teach elementary-age Thai students at an English day camp. The day camp offered different workshops covering topics such as writing, reading, music and games. This is a group of students from my English writing workshop.
hilltribewomenkids
These are some women and children from the Karen hill tribe we stayed with. They're picture here eating some cereal we offered them. It was an incredibly humbling experience to live and interact with the hill tribe because they live in such primitive conditions -- they've got some clothes, food, running water and that's about it. But they were some of the most joyful Christians I have ever met.
Gidclimbing
This is my crazy college pastor from home, Gideon (aka "P. Giddy"), demonstrating how to climb a bamboo tree in the Karen hill tribe area. It may look like he's high up, but don't be fooled -- the ground is less than 3 feet below him.

elephantride
Yes, that's me, riding on top of an elephant with Kat at the Pong Yang Elephant Camp. Our team got paired off and each pair had the opportunity to ride an elephant through a jungle path and past a lovely waterfall. Two things I remembered most about the elephants were they had very wrinkled skin and they loved to pass gas.

elephanttrick
This is one of the coolest things I've ever seen: an elephant trainer anticipates the elephant shooting water above his back and jumps in the air right as the water shoots under him. The interaction between the trainers and the elephants was really interesting to see during the elephant show.
