|
| Language
of learning March 13, 2003 |
This is a long-term article I wrote about a local Chinese-English dual language program at Glenwood Elementary. Glenwood's program is unique because it serves as one of three Chinese-English programs in the nation. This article actually ended up getting picked up by The Associated Press, The Raleigh News & Observer and other newspapers in North Carolina! |
| Apartments
warned of possible terrorist threat February 13, 2003 |
After the raised the terrorist threat level to "high risk," I wrote this article addressing the Homeland Security Department's alert to local apartment complexes about the high potential for terrorists targeting high-rise buildings. This story shows an example of taking a larger national issue and examining its effects in the local community. |
| Widening
Columbia debated March 21, 2002 |
This late-night article was written after I attended a forum hosted by UNC Hospitals. UNC Hospitals hosted the forum to receive residents' feedback about the possibility of widening Columbia Road. This story shows an example of a late-breaking news story written on a very short-term deadline. |
| Chapel
Hill poverty not easily seen February 25, 2002 |
This long-term article served as the first in a City Desk 3-part series addressing poverty in Orange County. The story shows my experience in researching a complex issue and transforming technical information into relevant news for readers. |
| Students,
specialty shops stress costume creativity October 30, 2001 |
This is a colorful article I wrote previewing UNC students' costume plans for Halloween. As one of the biggest parties of the year, Chapel Hill's Halloween celebration on Franklin Street is infamous for its partygoers' creative and outrageous costumes. It was fun to talk with students and retailers about costume ideas and trends. |
