Behind every seemingly chaotic weather process, a hidden order manifests itself. The music of The Starry Wisdom Band mirrors this phenomenon. What at first appears random begins to make sense as the listener is drawn deeper into a soundscape of dissonant counterpoint, layered melodies and unpredictable changes.

Established in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, January 1995, The Starry Wisdom Band was originally inspired by Stravinsky and Captain Beefheart, two favorites of ex-June bassist Andrew Magowan. Boasting memebers of other prominent Chapel Hill groups, The Starry Wisdom Band is a collaborative effort of experienced musicians. The powerful rock/pop influence from Magowan (who also provides lyrics and vocals) swirls with the dissonance and intricacy guitarist Walker Martin brings from scene favorite Bicentennial Quarters. Experimental indie pop sounds creep their way in through Andy Shull ( Minerva Strain, Ch'rora) whose trumpet playing compliments the violin work of Margaret White (Collapsis). Guitarist Scott Bullock is a perfect counterpart to Martin and drummer Ryan Boera lays down the beats with definite originality and skill.

At the beginning of October 1996, The Starry Wisdom Band recorded a three song demo with Jerry Kee at Duck Kee Studio on which "Apes," a catchy pop song with cryptic lyrics, "Planet of the Me-Hums," a fascinating instrumental piece and "Carnival of Death," a favorite show closer, are featured. A live version of "Planet of the Me-hums" has also been included on the WXDU benefit complilation "Power of Tower."
