Like many, but not all, classes at Carolina JOMC 050 requires students to do work. This page is dedicated to a research project that we completed, called a "treasure hunt." Using the internet and the information sources available through it, each student compiled information on a subject of his/her choosing and then composed a mini-essay on a popular internet topic. Being the baseball fan that I am, I elected to do my research on...

The History of the New York Mets

Happy 40th!

My mini-essay will most likely appeal to a broader audience - as it deals with...

Surprise! PORN Surprise!
...and the internet

Alright calm down now! I know you're excited, so here's the goods.

Title: The History of the New York Mets

Section 1:

I have been a life-long baseball fan and an even bigger New York Mets fan. I’ve followed the team for as long as I can remember but I’ve failed to learn the history of the club. The word Mets is short for the word Metropolitans and was decided on as the name of the club when it joined the National League in 1962. The team’s worst season in history was its inaugural season in 1962, but seven years later the team won its first of two World Series in 1969. The second championship came for the team in 1986. In the past few years critics have labeled the team as being older and a disappointment considering the large payroll and lackluster performance. Through my research I will discover what contribution Mets players have made to baseball and I will cover the successes and triumphs of the organization since its conception. My intended audience will be sports fans in general; most specifically baseball fans, and tailored to a national sports magazine audience.

The Growth of the Internet and Pornography: Why the Positive Correlation?

As the internet grows larger by the day, it also seems pornography and the number of easily accessible websites that contain pornography grow with it. Sex sells. It always has and always will, and web entrepreneurs know it. Americans spend between $1 billion and $2 billion a year on Internet pornography services (2), and the pornography business as a whole takes in about $10 billion to $14 billion a year – more than the NFL, MLB, and NBA combined. In January of this year alone, 27.5 million Americans ventured to sites that contained pornographic material and of those, 28 percent were women (3).

The growth of pornography on the Internet isn’t just in the United States however. According to the New Straits Times of Malaysia, the Asian population is logging on to pornographic sites more than ever before. Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan all report an increase of between 30 and 40 percent in the number of hits on pornographic websites (1).

In 2001, the number of pornographic websites reached the 300,000 mark and estimates show that 3,000 new sites pop up each week (3). Pornography on paper faces heavy censorship from the federal government, but with no worldwide or federal gatekeeper on the Internet to regulate pornography it has found its home in cyberspace.
With some services charging $2.99 a minute for live video of nude girls, a website, and the performer, can make tons of money. One woman reported making $2,000 a night while doing online performances – and that’s counting the share the owner of the site takes for his or herself (2).

The Internet, and ways to make money on it, are constantly growing. As long as men and women want sex, and there’s no one to regulate the industry, the supply will always meet the demand.
