I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at UNC - Chapel Hill where I teach courses in Audio Theory and Aesthetics and Audio Production. I consider myself to be primarily an audio artist. My most recent works include "SWARM #1", a sound sculpture shown at Raleigh's Lump Gallery, and "We Are All Housekeepers," an audio collage and installation done in conjunction with a photo exhibit by Susan Simone. That work was shown recently at the Horace Williams House in Chapel Hill and at the Hobson Pittman Memorial Gallery in Tarboro. I also have a soundscape, "Chion's Cricket" included on the recently released CD, "Zaum". Chion's Cricket is also included on my own CD, "Urbanscapes in a Temperate Rainforest," issued in small numbers in 1999. Nevertheless, visual arts have always been a part of my creative work. My first breakthrough came with the acceptance of one of my lighting designs by the Bentwood in Chapel Hill.

Gourd sculptures represent a new departure. I call the work "Technorganic." I try and give an organic object a hand finished look that invites close inspection. I want to suggest a technological precision that belies the handcrafted nature of the work yet retains the organic character of the material. Even though it begins with a gourd, it is thoroughly contemporary work devoid of any suggestion of the "faux primitive." Each piece has gone through dozens of steps beginning with the cleaning and precision cutting of the gourd followed by painting that can include as many as twenty coats of primers, acrylic colors, lacquers, polymer coatings, and finishing waxes. Making these pieces brings me great joy and satisfaction. I hope you enjoy them as well.
