ASSIGNED READINGS" (Available at Student Stores)

Much of the assigned reading is complex and conceptually
challenging. You should, therefore, be reading a minimum of 125 pages per
week in order to be prepared for class discussions and the three exams
that will be administered during the semester. Read the books in the
order in which they are listed.
		READ IN THE ORDER BELOW
		1. Michael Katz, In the Shadow of the Poor House
		2. Andrew Hacker, Two Nations: Black and White, Separate,
		   Hostile, Unequal
		3. S. Thernstrom and A. Thernstrom, America in Black and
		   White: One Nation, Indivisible
		4. Kathryn Edin, Making Ends Meet
		5. William Wolman, The Judas Economy
		6. Course Packs and Reprints

QUESTIONS, ETC.

While there will be considerable overlap between materials covered in the assigned readings and materials covered in class, they will not always be congruent. If you want clarification and elaboration on anything covered either in the readings or in class, you should write out your question (you may remain anonymous, if you wish) and leave it on the desk at the front of the room on your way out of class. I will collect the questions and answer them at the beginning of the following class period. Alternatively, you may e-mail any questions, comments, etc. to me and I shall respond by e-mail or in class. My email address is jjschwar@email.unc.edu
