Bio Info: Although born in Guilford County, North
Carolina, school and work have taken me to places I never imagined as a child.
From 1996-2000 I attended The Citadel in Charleston, SC, earning a BA in
history. Following graduation I was commissioned an Army infantry officer
and completed a years of training in Fort Benning, GA. Upon
completion of training in Georgia, I reported to Friedberg, Germany to serve as
a Mechanized Infantry platoon leader and a company executive officer with Alpha
Company of the 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment
of the Army's 1st
Brigade, 1st Armored
Division. September 11, 2001 placed US foreign
policy on a "war footing", and by the spring of 2002, everyone in our unit
expected to be in Iraq by the Spring of the following year. From May 11,
2003-July 18 2004, I
served as an Infantry Company Executive Officer in Baghdad, Iraq in support of
Operation Iraqi Freedom I and II. Redeployment to Germany finally provided
some time for travel in the Bavarian Alps, Bohemia,
Slovakia, and the High Tatra Mountains.
Returning from over 3 years of overseas duty, I finally returned to NC in late
August 2004. My obligation with the Army completed, I'm now a civilian in
a strange "transitional period" after 4 years of uniquely rigorous
employment.
My academic interests include antebellum southern history, web design (quite recently), blogging, global economics, and the impact of digital communications on democracy throughout the world. I enjoy time with family and friends, mountain biking, beer drinking, fishing, hiking, dogs, and living at the beach. I'm enrolled in two courses this semester while pursuing UNC-Chapel Hill's School of Journalism's Graduate Certificate in Technology and Communication in hopes of increasing my proficiency with digital communications, making a website, and becoming a better writer.
