Can your browser display Japanese web pages correctly?
This Japanese text: これは 日本語 です...ね? should look similar to this graphics image: ![]()
If the Japanese text is not displaying correctly:
- Go to View > (Character) encoding on your browser's menu bar and try a different "Unicode" or "Japanese" setting. For this page, try "Unicode UTF-8" or "Japanese/Auto-Detect (Auto-Select)".
- If it still doesn't work, or you have no "Japanese" setting in View > Encoding, then go to the resources page for more information about configuring your computer and web browser.
Some external Japanese pages to try (with different kinds of character encoding)
- The Japanese Wikipedia article on 'Linguistics'. This page uses the "Unicode UTF-8" character encoding.
- Kyushu U. Linguistics Department. This page uses the "Japanese Shift-JIS" character encoding.
- The Asahi newspaper site. This page uses the "Japanese EUC-JP" character encoding.
A final note: Older versions of Netscape, especially version 4.x and earlier, don't work that well with web stylesheets and Japanese/Unicode fonts. If you're using an older browser, you might want to consider upgrading to the free Firefox browser from Mozilla. (Internet Explorer, Safari, and other current browsers generally work well too.)
