Text: Calculus: Concepts and Contexts, James Stewart, 3rd Edition
Course Syllabus

Course Description:

Math 232 is a calculus course designed to strengthen
your understanding of integral calculus. Major topics are
divided into four units of study listed below.

• Chapter 5: Techniques of Integration
• Chapter 6: Applications of Integrals
• Chapter 7: Differential Equations
• Chapter 8: Sequences and Series

Tests:

There will be two in-class tests on the following dates:
• Test 1: Thursday, September 20th, 2007

The first test will cover sections 5.5, 8.1-8.9. Remember that we
skipped some parts of chapter 8, and I taught the last couple of sections
in a different order than the book. Still, any of the questions in those
sections should be a good study tool (except those questions that involve
calculators).

• Test 2: Thursday, October 25th, 2007.

The second test will cover sections 5.6, 5.7 and 5.10. It will also cover
some material from Chapter 8 that we can now do. Notable examples would be
the Integral comparison test for series (since we can handle integrals where
one endpoint is infinity); and, computing Taylor Series of rational functions
(since we can simplify them with partial fractions).

The final will be on Thursday, December 13, 2007 at 4:00pm.
Do not miss the final exam. Only under special circumstances can you make
a missed exam. The exam will be cumulative - it will cover everything we
have learned this semester.

Homework:

All homework assignments will be posted here. Please print them
and do all work on the printout. Please bring completed assignments
to class on the due date. I do not accept late assignments.
Remember to write neatly, show all your work, and staple each assignment.

HW 1 - Due Thursday, August 30th.

HW 2 - Due Thursday, September 6th.
The first question says "in your own words...". I'm serious, don't
copy or paraphrase the book.

HW 3 - Due Tuesday, September 18th.
Note: For the questions 3 and 4 you should use the definition of a Taylor series.
For 5 and 6, use any shortcuts you want.

HW 4 - Due Tuesday, October 9th.
The last question is pretty tricky. You will need to
use more than one method of integration that we learned.
Try substitution first!

HW 5 - Due Tuesday, October 23rd.

HW 6 - Due Tuesday, October 30th.
These are 2 questions that got removed from the test so that it
wasn't too long. It's really short, so you should be able to
finish it by Tuesday.

HW 7 - Due Thursday, November 8th.
You must sketch the area/volume you are trying to find
to get full credit. In at least one case it will affect
how you can find the volume.

HW 8 - Postponed to Thursday, November 29th.
Please read and follow the directions for word problems.

Homework solutions:

Here's the solutions. They're not very pretty. In fact,
they're pretty messy. Also, they're in bmp format for now.
But it should do until I clean them up. Also, each page is a
different file. I had to use a windows machine to scan them
which confused and infuriated me!

Resources:

The math help center is located in Phillips 224, and is open from 4-8pm
Monday-Thursday this semester. For more info, check out their webpage here.

Here's a list of suggested problems from a past year. There are a lot
of questions in the back of the sections, but some of them are too difficult.
This will give you an indication of suitable questions for homework and tests.

Here is a set of tips for determining convergence of series.
Note that we have not learned some of these in class yet, but we will.
