Sexual Violence on College Campuses
In my women's studies course I took last semester I
learned that sexual violence is highly prevalent on college campuses all across
our nation. Rape is a big part of this sexual violence and much of it goes unreported
for fear that the victim will be persecuted and the assailant will not be prosecuted.
Much of these rapes are acquaintance rape, or rape committed by someone with
whom the victim is already familiar. There is also a large problem with gang
rapes among America's universities that are primarily committed by athletes
or fraternities. I have many questions I would like answered by doing this research.
One thing I hope to get by doing this project is to acquire some precise statistics
on rapes and other forms of sexual violence that occur on all college campuses,
hopefully even to find some statistics on colleges near the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill. I would also like to find detailed accounts of court
cases against the assailants and see how the courts have ruled and if the rulings
are biased in anyway. One last thing I would like to do is to find enough information
so that I could possibly start a successful group on campus against such violence
as rape and sexual harassment. I intend to have a mixed audience for this project
ranging from young high school students on into their grandparents. More importantly
I hope to reach the college age group because this problem affects them the
most. I hope to show women and men that sexual violence is a very real problem
on our campuses and that it is a problem that can be remedied. I hope to reach
the younger groups in order to make them aware of the problem and show them
ways they can prevent it from happening. Likewise I hope to reach the older
groups in order to gain support for the others who are fighting against sexual
violence.

Net Business and Economics:
Internet Mini-Essay
TITLE: America Online: Past and Present
TOPIC AREA: Net Business
In 1985, Stephen Case became chairman of what would later
grow into a multi-billion dollar net business. America Online, founded on the
idea of convenient services for mass-market economies, continues to seek out
the dream that AOL will grow into a central life necessity just like the television
or air conditioning. America Online brought to the World Wide Web many innovative
things such as the Keyword search and Buddy List operations. This past January
1, America Online merged with Time Warner Incorporation and now oversees many
smaller operations such as AOL, Instant Messenger, Spinner.com, Nullsoft's Winamp,
and Mapquest. America Online's services are available in sixteen countries all
over the globe and accessible in eight different languages. America Online continues
to be innovative with its new development of AOL Anywhere in which subscribers
can access My Calendar, You've Got Pictures, Media Player, and Email from any
Internet accessible computer. America Online can be accessed using either high
speed or dial-up connections. America Online's Stephen Case leads the way and
now allied with Sun Microsystems, AOL offers solutions for other companies involved
in the Net economy. Now serving more than 29 million AOL members, its merge
with Time Warner has increased membership with the additions of 2.8 million
Compuserve members, 34 million Netscape members, and 80 million ICQ users. Just
this past March, America Online's total revenue increased in three months from
1.81 billion dollars to 9.08 billion dollars. These figures convey to any normal
user, America Online will be around for a while and is possibly as popular as
Bill Gates' own Microsoft Company.
