    Certain modifications of current land use practices could further encourage increased non-motorized transit and public transit use.

Land Use Changes to Promote Non-Motorized Transit

    To facilitate non-motorized transit in Chapel Hill, the Town should toward mixed-use, self-sustaining community developments that will meet the needs of both the residents and the employees. Instead of having distinct residential and commercial areas, new development should focus around a community with several different uses including:

    Essentially, the most effective way to encourage non-motorized transit is to shorten the average commute distance. If everything a person needs is within walking distance (less than a mile), then there is little reason to drive.  This shift would require adjustments to the current zoning codes that would allow for a greater maximum density of development (and perhaps a minimum density as well).
