Collaborators

The Boyz Are Back Inc. brings people of diverse age, race, education, and socio-economic background together. Community collaborations are key to developing our volunteer base and securing in-kind donations.

Board members and volunteers are comprised of black and white adults, ages from 20s to 60+s, residing in middle-class to affluent neighborhoods. Education includes associate’s, bachelor’s, and postgraduate degrees.  Each person is associated with a faith-based group, such as predominantly black St. Peter’s World Outreach Church, Burning Flame Christian Church, and Union Baptist Church as well as predominantly white Agape Faith Church and Crossfire Church.

Those associated with The Boyz interact with representatives from government agencies, such as the Center for Community Safety and the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. Local businesses, private schools, and non-profit groups are also involved primarily by making in-kind donations.

While interacting with youth, black volunteers demonstrate their similarities with white volunteers in terms of faith involvement. All volunteers expand their knowledge and understanding of the struggles faced by at-risk youth.

Community problem solving and lasting bonds of trust among diverse groups are advanced through The Boyz's services. For example, volunteers who serve as liaisons between school officials and at-risk families improve understanding and cooperation. As many long-term problems surface first in the school system, bridging those with diverse viewpoints aids in problem solving.

Faith-based organizations associated with The Boyz gain insight into the needs of the at-risk community, as a result, can develop and/or modify outreach programs for this population.

In 2003, in-kind donations came from businesses, schools, and non-profit agencies, and private donors:

▲    3MV Management-event management;
▲    Hauser Rental-tent rental services;
▲    Buffalo Bills-footballs;
▲    Forsyth Country Day School-facility usage;
▲    Private donors-coaches, security officers, staffers;
▲    Chick-Fil-A in Winston-Salem-meals;
▲    Page’s Gifts and Awards-awards and banners;
▲    Kaplan Early Learning Company-school supplies;
▲    Reebok-t-shirts and shorts;
▲    Center for Community Safety-transportation.
