Accolades
Although there are areas for improvement, www.EllisIsland.org achieves its purpose of education, awareness, and fund-raising by effectively serving its target audience. The availability, storage, and accessibility of valuable information are exceptional.

Suggestions
Here are some suggestions in order of priority:
  • Make the site accessible according to federal government standards.
  • Create a home page with links to all pages from this location.
  • Eliminate references to the "saved search" function.
  • Improve navigation in less prominent areas of the site and indicate visibility of user location in all areas for a more enjoyable, consistent experience.
  • Allow the header to recede in the Immigrant Experience area.
  • Increase the differentiation between user and member services.

One of the most exciting things about researching this site was my discovery that its uses extend beyond family research for geneological purposes. Many of the passengers were documented in these files were U.S. citizens and members of ships' crews; as a result, it is of interest to anyone doing family or historical research.

The design, navigation, and purpose of this site provides for meaningful interactivity.

Thanks to the National Park Service for the photograph of the aerial view of Ellis Island.
