    • Bradley, S. A. Anglo-Saxon Poetry. Everyman. Vermont: Tuttle, 1982.
    • Abrams, M. H., gen. ed. The Norton Anthology of English Literature, 7th ed., vol. I. New York: Norton, 2000 (OR vol. 1A, "The Middle Ages" in the same edition).
    Requirements:
    • Reading: Careful reading of the assigned portions of the texts. The proposed reading schedule appears on a separate page.

    • Class Participation: We will use a Blackboard discussion forum to supplement classroom discussion. Beginning January 16, I will expect you to post at least one contribution to it per week. More on this in class.

    • Midterm examination: On FRIDAY, March 10. I will give you ten or so short passages from the assigned readings and ask you to identify them and comment briefly (in a short paragraph). We will use Securexam for midterm and final.

    • Two Short (ca. four-page) Papers: the first will be due Monday February 27, the second due Monday April 24. We will discuss topics in class.

    • Final exam: This will consist of passages from the readings to identify and discuss, and two essays (there will be some choice of topic). The exam is May 8 at 8 a.m.

    • Class Attendance and Participation: In case it needs saying, class attendance is required.

    • Weighting for final grade (approximate): midterm 22%, final 24%; papers each 18%; class participation 18%.
